Reading Development

Good Shepherd Academy School (GSA) uses Accelerated Christian Education’s  (A.C.E.’s) Bible-based, individualized, and self-instructional curriculum. The academic system involves diagnostic testing, goal setting, and mastery of subject content.

A.C.E. has taken the conventionally styled textbook and divided it into bite-sized, achievable work texts called PACEs. Each PACE is similar to a unit in a textbook. Each level consists of 12 PACEs in each subject. PACEs integrate Godly character-building lessons into the academic content, and self-instructional activities are carefully designed to develop thinking skills and create mastery learning.

Unlike a classroom setting where a teacher lectures the students, A.C.E.’s curriculum allows students to read the material for themselves, answer questions, and then test comprehension of the subject. Whether the student is a high achiever or a moderately-paced learner, the A.C.E. curriculum progresses at the exact level of the child’s ability

Individualization makes it possible for each student to master the subject before moving on. Such mastery is the foundation upon which all future learning is built. Individualization produces academic excellence. Students take responsibility for their own learning. Biblical character training received as part of this learning experience prepares students to welcome and accept challenges and future opportunities that come their way.

 

 

Beginning Reading Programs for Young Children

Kindergarten with Ace and Christi

This full-year program is based on a complete scope and sequence of concepts and skills needed to prepare a child to read. The program is designed for children who do not pass the ABCs with Ace and Christi Pretest. Sixty PACEs (2,000 pages) filled with Bible and animal pictures, coordination development activities, and full-color picture stories encourage a love for reading. The program is intended to foster quick learning of the phonetic sounds for all letters. The student will also learn social skills, the wonders of God’s world, and the reality of God’s love.

 

ABCs with Ace and Christi

This 12- to 15-week program is designed for those who have not been to school or who do not yet know how to read. To enroll, the student must pass both parts of the Pretest and show the proper maturity level as determined by the Coordination Development Tests. This program will prepare children for the individualized instruction of the PACE curriculum. The lively and entertaining phonetically-based program features cartoon characters, songs, poems, displays, and character-building activities.

 

 

Second-Language Reading Programs 

Speaking English with Ace and Christi

This course is designed for preschool-aged children who are learning to speak English as their second language. Sixty lessons teach conversational English and prepare students for ABCs with Ace and Christi.

ABCs for English Learners

This full-year program is designed for children aged 5–9 who have passed the Pretest. The Pretest helps to determine if a student is ready to learn to read. This program combines Speaking English with Ace and Christi and ABCs with Ace and Christi. It allows students to learn to read and speak English with enough comprehension to begin working Level 1 PACEs in English by week 19.

English as Your Second Language

This DVD-based program is for older students and adults who do not speak English as their first language. The 6–12 month sequence of short English lessons leads to intermediate level proficiency.

Bible Reading

This program reinforces reading skills with Scripture selections for Levels 2–6. (In Level 1, the instructor reads to the students.) Readings demonstrate Christian principles and complement character-building activities included in the ABCs with Ace and Christi program.
